British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.
The facility, located using intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.
"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several approach shafts leading to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.
There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.
The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.
"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.
UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.
"I must thank all the members of our armed forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their valour," he said. "They were part of a great many UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate militants who endanger our safety, highlights how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."
Last December, the American forces executed what it described as a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.
The UN reports IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
