Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for an extended period when numerous of them drifted across the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
Since January, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
